Issue Position: Tax and Spending Reform

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012
Issues: Taxes

It's time to stop swapping taxes based on special interest needs and start cutting them for South Carolina income earners. We also must tie those tax cuts to job growth and raising income levels, which means starting with income tax relief. Similarly, we need to look at a whole host of exemptions, fees and other sources of revenue to determine where we can lower the burden on taxpayers and stimulate job creation. Just as importantly, it's time to cap spending growth in South Carolina to population plus inflation so that we can avoid the revenue roller coaster that puts our core services at risk during every economic downturn. Simply put, it's time to put state government on a long-overdue diet.
